Look beneath the surface

People criticizing Rusty's personality should look at his environment. I think Rusty's behavior is a classic defense mechanism. I have never once seen Rusty with his master. I'm not even sure he has a master for that matter. He is acting out in hopes someone will fill the role of disciplinarian. He wants boundaries and no one is setting them. If we looked at his behavior properly - as a cry for help - we might think twice about writing him off as a pariah.

HAD EXPERIENCE WITH RUSTY DOWN BY FARMER'S MARKET. RUSTY WAS CHAINED TO SIGNPOST. HE WAS VICIOUSLY CHEWING ON HIS OWN RUMP AND THERE WAS LITTLE FUR LEFT THERE AND LOTS OF BLOOD. I ASKED THE MARKET'S OWNER ABOUT THE STRANGE DOG AND NOBODY KNEW WHO HE BELONGED TO OR WHO LEFT HIM, BUT THAT THEY WOULD CALL ANIMAL CONTROL IF SOMEBODY DIDN'T TAKE HIM SOON. SOMEONE TRIED TO FEED HIM DOG FOOD AND RUB OINTMENT ON HIS RUMP BUT HE WAS HAVING NONE OF IT. HIS BREATH SMELLED LIKE CIGARETTES AND HE WOULD OPEN HIS MOUTH REALLY WIDE FOR NO REASON. NOT A VERY GOOD DOG.

MOST PECULIAR HABITS

I have lived next door to this dog for about 3 months. During this time I have observed a pattern of strange behavior. From my bedroom window I can see my neighbor's backyard quite clearly. Rusty is often in this backyard doing unexplainable things.

Often times he will stand on his hind legs with his front paws placed against a tree. He will stare directly at the tree and remain in that position for hours. The first time I saw him doing it I thought he was actually some kind of statue, but no, it was a real dog.

One time when he was doing this he toppled over and I thought for sure he was dead, so I went and knocked on my neighbor's door. There was no answer and the smell was so horrible that I went back home. I looked out the window again an hour later and he was back to standing against the tree.

Other times he wanders around the yard following the same path, wearing strange symbols into the yard. This is not the behavior of a normal dog. I have never seen his owner ever but he really needs to get his dog help (and also take better care of the lawn because it is extremely overgrown).

The dog has an unusual diet. I have seen him eat his way through a pile of rotting rhubarbs and another time he methodically consumed several whole pumpkins.

I have told my children to stay away from Rusty and I advise you to do the same.

A WALKING JUSTIFICATION FOR EUTHANASIA

Rusty is overtly sinister. He doesn't attack people physically, but he seems to be an expert at toying with people. Often times I will see him walking backwards down the street. I have reported this dog to animal control since it does not need to be wandering so freely, let alone acting out so strangely. If a child saw Rusty they might get the wrong idea about dogs or possibly be so frightened they fear dogs forever.

Disgusting habits - please avoid!

I saw Rusty leashed to the bike rack outside of the library. I thought he could use some company, so I stopped to pet him. First of all, this dog has the worst skin and fur I've ever seen. It felt like I was rubbing my hands on olive oil and dust. My hands were absolutely caped with this stuff. Then, to make matters worse, Rusty became, well, visibly excited. Other people saw me with him and it was terribly embarrassing. I left as fast I could and had to wash my hands three times before they were finally clean. I don't need people thinking I'm going around enticing dogs, and I certainly don't need Rusty misconstruing my attempts to be nice. I have never been more humiliated by a dog in my life. I give this dog half a bone out of five bones (lowest rating I can give).

Disregard my previous review!

My attempts to give Rusty the benefit of the doubt were in error. I saw him leashed to a tree in the park and decided to give him some food since no one seemed to be paying any attention to him and he was all alone. I left a bowl of food out and he wagged his tail and acted happy. The next day I woke up and went to get the newspaper. Soon as I stepped out the door, my feet landed in a puddle of vomit. I looked over and saw my newspaper shredded. Rusty was standing at the edge of my yard with his mouth hanging wide open. He was making some kind of hissing sound. I yelled at him to get away and he slowly hobbled away backwards. I'm a patient man but this dog is just evil. If someone doesn't shoot him soon, I will.
